Advanced Placement
The Advanced Placement Program® (AP) enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue university-level studies while still in secondary school.
The program consists of university-level courses developed by the AP Program that secondary schools can choose to offer, and corresponding exams that are administered once a year.
What is the Advanced Placement (AP) program?
The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is an internationally recognized program of study for highly motivated students.
It began with a study 50 years ago by three universities: Harvard, Yale and Princeton.
History of the Advanced Placement Program
The intent of the program was to facilitate students' transition from high school to university by enriching the high school curriculum.
Today, the AP Program is sponsored by the College Board, a national nonprofit educational association of universities and high schools in the United States.
The programming has since been introduced in Canada and internationally.
Advantages of AP
Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer students several academic advantages. Universities in both the United States and Canada may grant university credit to students who complete certain AP courses and earn qualifying exam scores in high school. The enriched curriculum helps students develop essential time-management and study skills that prepare them for the demands of university coursework. Additionally, AP participation can increase students' confidence in their ability to perform at an internationally recognized academic level (College Board, n.d.).
Model of Delivery at Sir Allan MacNab
Students enrolled in AP courses at Sir Allan MacNab will learn alongside their peers in the corresponding university-level class. Students in the AP section, however, will complete additional course material, assignments, and assessments designed to prepare them for the AP examination in May. Upon successful completion, students will earn a high school credit that meets graduation requirements and carries an Advanced Placement designation.
